Stumped

Stumped. That's the best way to describe the last layout I made, and the first of the two that I posted to my FB page today. For me, nothing seemed to jive. I hope I'm past this crop block, because I go through withdrawals when I can't play! Its utter torture.

There's nothing too fancy about my Blessings layout. I began with a sketch that I had printed out, but in the end, I just didn't feel it at all. I wound up going my own way, after much fussing and rearranging and not liking how things looked. Heh. Sometimes, we just have to go our own way. All the patterned papers on this particular layout are Jillibean Soup- from the Winter Tortellini and Country Pumpkin collections. The Blessings tag is also Jillibean (Country Pumpkin). The folder tag in the top right corner, along with the scallop circle embellishment are Carta Bella, and the rest is just miscellaneous stash that I used up.

The most important thing to note about this layout is that the black folder that's slipped behind all the paper, is actually the print of the photo that the Melting Pot took while we were having dinner. I forgot all about it until I finished the layout! I didn't know how else to incorporate it at that point, other than just slipping it in somewhere. It also meant that I needed stronger adhesive so that my project wouldn't pull apart. So, I pulled out a new pack of glue dots, and re-adhered my main photo mat (all the paper that the photo and journalling tag are adhered to).

My next layout is a little more detailed. I picked up the colors that are already found in the program and postcard that the group of actors gave me for my birthday- which was red, black and blue. I immediately thought of my nautical stamp set for this layout. It fit the theme perfectly!

On the flip side of the postcard, I adhered a small piece of scrap punched card stock, just to add a bit of interest to an otherwise busy but boring layout. I also added a journalling tag that I punched using my CM tag punch, and included just a bit of journalling on it. I also included the date we saw NCIS, which was the date of my birthday- November 3.

I also included the ticket stub from our evening out at Jubilations. A really great way to hold onto memorabilia that you eventually want to scrapbook is throwing everything into a folder or page protector. Then, everything is in one place, and you can refer to it as you complete those projects. If you really want to get organized, you can create a folder for every event, or one of every month of the year, and throw things into the corresponding folder after the event happens. Just a little food for thought. I personally like using a page protector. I can see what's inside, and it isn't often that we enjoy things such as this, so for now, I don't need anything more. Maybe that'll evolve one day in the future, but for now, don't fix anything that's not broken!

Bulletin Board

Who else found the April sketchy challenge layout incredibly inspiring? There were two ways I immediately thought of doing to recreate the background- first was to use Washi Tape to mimic the look of a bulletin board, and the second idea was to cut squares of patterned paper, and rotate them on their side so they create the illusion of diamonds. I want to try that technique next, so I'm pretty sure that if I get scrappy time tonight, that's what I'll be doing next.

My mojo must have fled the scene, because I sure struggled with what to do after I got the background completed on this layout. I just didn't know what direction I wanted to take, or how to proceed. I knew that rather than using three small photos, I just wanted to use one. I didn't want any other pictures distracting from the beautiful flowers Kyle ordered for me before we got to the Melting Pot. I'd never been to an upscale restaurant that has the option of pre-ordering full bouquets of flowers for loved ones. What a lovely and unique idea, and it blew me away (hence the title). I thought they were a centre piece for the table we were sitting at.

After playing around with squares of patterned paper and re-arranging them multiple times, I came up with the idea of taking my postcard stamp (by Stampendous) to recreate a post card, and the twine and mini clothes pins add a unique twist to the traditional bulletin board. There's a small blue tag slipped behind the postcard and photo, which houses the journalling for this layout. All I really knew after I got the lines in the background adhered was that I wanted to recreate the look of a personal bulletin board any one of us would have at home. I think for the next one I do, I'll include some receipts and a little more stamping (which I had planned on doing on this one, and forgot!!); maybe some of the kids' artwork. I'll know when I actually get there!

I did begin working on another layout after this one last night, but I struggled even more with the layout I printed to scrap lift; I scrapped that idea, and am now trying to work it out on my own. I sat for 45 minutes moving things around and not liking any of what I saw, so I decided to leave it and sleep. I'll try it again when my head has cleared. I think I left it last night before bed is the way I want to keep it. Now its just a matter of figuring out the embellishing and where to add journalling and a title!

Neat Package

How would you describe this layout?

For me, its rich and busy, but in a good way. Its jam packed full of information, different elements, or in other words, embellishments, colour...there's so much to look at on such a small space of paper! How fantastic is this?! I've made the most use I possibly can on this layout. I am quite impressed!

My birthday this year was all about me. The whole weekend celebrating my birthday was for me. The reason behind it is very personal and deep and will take way too long to explain, so I'll skip over that part. Like all things, it'll probably have a way of creeping back into my work anyways. Sooner or later, you'll find out what the big secret is. I will say, however, that it's directly related to my personal struggles with depression and post-partum in the last few years.

The fun began on the second of November. Kyle had booked a date for us at the Melting Pot (in advance. If you plan on going, plan to book at least a month in advance. They are that busy.) for dinner that Friday. Neither of us expected the out-of-this-world experience we enjoyed while we were there. The brownies and chocolate fondue- my personal favourite of the entire evening- was (please excuse me) better than sex. I've never had anything so MIND BLOWING! I was so full by the time dessert rolled around, and yet I couldn't help myself when I tasted those brownies. I even asked for a second plate. O.M.G!!!!! I could have gone for a third, but I would have exploded by then. Kyle would have had to roll me out of the restaurant. Wait...he actually did...LOL

I held onto the menu that we grabbed from the restaurant, planning to work it into a layout when I got around to scrapping my birthday weekend. Thankfully, I didn't forget to include it! The layout Heather posted to her blog, recently, was the perfect platform for creating this layout. The vertical space for a 4x6 picture became the spot I would put my menu- but on the opposite side of the page. Instead of two horizontal pictures, I printed my pictures smaller (2x3), and included three black and white pictures.

On a little side note, the pictures I used on this layout are terrible. The lighting was dim in the restaurant (it was very romantic), and even though I had my camera, I used my cell phone to take the pictures. I must have forgotten the camera in the truck or something. So, my pictures were blurry and fuzzy. I was absolutely disappointed in the quality of my pictures, but consoled myself with the reminder that converting poor pictures to black and white helps hide the faults. Boy, is it ever true!

I wanted whoever will be look at my layouts in the future (primarily the girls, since my albums are going to be inherited by them), to be able to open the menu and be able to see what we ordered while at the Melting Pot. So, I just adhered the back portion of the menu so the entire thing unfolds when its opened. The two circles at the bottom, where my title work is located, works as a great tab to help open up the menu.

The back sides of the photos that overlap the menu are both slightly embellished with hearts and word stickers, both emphasizing how fantastic the restaurant was and the weekend we were enjoying sans kids. To highlight what we ordered, I used some washi tape and a small banner I made and adhered it next to our order.

After all my embellishing was complete and all the pictures and papers were adhered together, I began thinking about how I would incorporate journalling into this layout. On this particular layout, journalling was mandatory. Just the pictures and menu weren't enough to explain the reason I created this layout. It began with trying to figure out how to incorporate some hidden journalling (using a tag, large piece of paper- anything, really- and placing it behind a large element on your layout- whether its a menu like I used, or large piece of paper; and then attaching something as a pull tab so that its easy to remove from wherever its 'hidden'.)

Rather than creating hidden journalling, why not use the negative space behind the two photos that are attached to the menu for my journalling?! (Side note: I strategically placed the adhesive only on the sides of the pictures that would be attached to the menu, so that it could still be opened.) I really love how it turned out- journalling in this manner worked out marvellously- and, in more ways than one! Not only did I get my journalling done in a creative and efficient manner, my journalling also inspired my title- 33.

So now, everything ties together in a neat, if not busy, little package!

Lifestyle Photos

Good afternoon! How is your Thursday going? Its another beautiful day here- we're above 10 degrees again this afternoon. The windows are cracked a bit again today, letting some of that wonderful fresh air into the house to freshen things up again. I love it!! We waited until nearly noon for Kyle to come home--he was gone for a good 16 hours last night! Yikes. He says there's a possibility he could be going out again tonight; if not, he's got a rig move going on tomorrow. In a way, I hope he doesn't have to work until tomorrow. He's going to need the rest. Switching from day to nights to days again is going to wreak havoc on his internal clock. I don't envy him at this time of year at all!

To keep myself busy last night, I created another layout, and the finished product came about by chance. Sort of. I desperately need a new blade for my paper trimmer, but Walmart doesn't carry the replacement blades (yet they carry the paper trimmer, itself. Go figure). Grrr. (On a tangent, its like training pants. They have potty training underwear for the littles, but don't carry the plastic liners that a toddler wears over top of them. S.M.R.T. If you ask me.)

Cutting regular weight patterned paper is taking chance into your own hands- the cut could be crisp and clean, but more likely, its going to be ripped and torn and plain messy looking. Which, it was. So, I decided to roll with it. I broke out a piece of sand paper (which I haven't used in a coons age), and distressed the edges of all the paper in this layout, including the pictures. I was going for a shabby chic sort of look. I don't think I mastered it at all, but I do like the distressed look. Actually, I love the distressed look. I need to do it a little more often. I love the personality and character it adds.

I began with a plain piece of white card stock, and used a tooth brush (of all things) to paint on the background. I like the dry brushing look it lends. I tried the splattering technique first, but haven't quite gotten the hang of it. I scrapped that idea and just painted the old fashioned way (except for the tooth brush part). I cut the squares of patterned paper to the same size as the pictures, which is 2x3--which I find works incredibly well for an 8.5x11 size layout, if you want multiple photos--then embellished them a bit using stickers, a photo corner and what was left of the patterned paper I used behind the white card stock.

Lastly, the numbers of the date didn't match my color scheme (which I pulled inspiration from Pinterest for), so I painted them up, too. I used a small paint brush to add color, then took a dry paint brush and dry stroked them to help some of the color pop through, but not too much. It also adds a bit more texture to the layout, too. IRL it almost looks like wood grain.

The inspiration for my layout came from Pinterest (it originally came from the JBS blog, I do believe), but there was no way I was going to be able to stretch my title work across the top of the page. I split it up- part of it along the top of the spread, and the last half along the bottom of my spread. It helps carry your eye right to the bottom of the layout. I think, though, if I were to tweak it a little more, I'd add some more deep brown accents to my layout, as another way to help draw a persons eye around the page. I can't help but feel the eye gets stuck on the date.

Meh, oh well. Work place hazard :) I'm still in love with my layout!!

I may or may not attempt scrapping again tonight. It all depends on what my husband wants to do and how he feels. If he needs more sleep, I'll be back in here crafting up a storm. But, if he feels lively enough, I'm going to chillax with him, instead. I've missed him these last two days!

Outside the Box

I am finally nearing the end of our boudoir/lifestyle photo session scrapbook pages. In a way, I'm kind of sad that I'm at the end (I have only one layout left in this series), but in a way, I'm incredibly satisfied. Not only did I scrapbook these pictures for the girls to look back on, and see what fun their mama and auntie A had, but I also got a special mini album and layout done for my best friend. That's about as fulfilling as scrapbooking can get. And, nothing is more rewarding!

I'm now contemplating making a layout of our day just for myself, to hang on one of the walls in our house. I just might have to do that!

The layout I completed last night, the one you'll find here, finally deals with the whole point of our day: our photos! As part of my package, I got to have a few lifestyle photos done, so those are in plain view on this layout. I wasn't comfortable sharing my boudoir photos with the world wide web, so I got creative with the sketch I used, and the layout I created.

This is my favorite part! In the sketch, a tag with journalling was added to the right side of both pictures. Since this layout didn't require any journalling, I switched it up and made this cute little flip book, which is tied closed with lace ribbon. I used the lace ribbon to mimic the outfit I was wearing in my boudoir photos, which is partly white lace. If anyone wants to see the hidden pictures, all they need to do is untie the ribbon, and flip through the book. For a little bit of a teaser, I made each succeeding page a tad bit longer (also so the pages are a bit easier to flip). I also switched the placement of the journalling tag- rather than the right side, I put my flip book on the left side of the layout.

The outfit I wore for my boudoir photos is black and white, so I wanted to stick with a color scheme that highlighted those two colors. I found a color scheme (on Pinterest) that added yellow as an accent color, so used varying shades and tones of yellow and light brown/ to accent this layout. Once again, I carried the lace theme throughout the layout, using a lace doily in the background.

When it was time to add the title work, I began wondering what type of alpha would be best to use. I wanted to add a bit of a glamorous air, since both A and I felt pretty glamorous all dolled up, so pulled out my dollar store glitter alphas. There wasn't a second 'O' in black, so I cut a part a lower case 'd', to make the letter 'O', and consequently a letter 'I', since I wasn't able to find that in black, either. Once in a while, it helps to think outside the box!

Its a very simple design, but that's the way I like it!
